Alternative trajectories for human demographic growth in pre-agricultural societies
We assume farming was the only route to large, complex societies. FORAGER, a 6-year ERC Synergy project, tests that assumption. Working across four temperate forager heartlands — Japan, the Baltic, the Pacific Northwest, and Northeast North America — and co-creating research with Indigenous partners, we're uncovering the causes and consequences of population booms among hunter-gatherer-fishers, and the alternative futures those histories still hold open.
FORAGER is led by four PIs — Oliver Craig, Enrico Crema, Peter Jordan, and Anna Prentiss — bringing together biomolecular archaeology, statistical modelling, cultural evolution, and settlement archaeology. Together with 37 scientists across 9 institutions in 7 countries, we work across every scale of evidence, from food crusts in pottery to global climate simulations. Seven working packages trace prehistoric hunter-gatherer lifeways from subsistence to social organisation.
